Getting Off The Ground
Jesse is a young, ambitious cannabis entrepreneur who decided to put his skills to the test when he opened The Leaf Boutique in Vancouver.
He set everything up with help from friends and family – finding retail space, interior renovations and design, creating and posting signs, setting up his marketing channels, and finding a POS solution.
Like many small businesses, he started with a generic POS cash register and ran the store much like you would any other retail operation. Now The Leaf Boutique has polished operations for not only physical retail but also a successful online store, with plans for rapid expansion to multiple locations.
The Leaf Boutique started in the early days of cannabis retail, where operating procedures and business structures were loose in the industry.
As The Leaf Boutique grew larger and business increased, so did the amount of cash and cannabis that flowed through his store. Jesse was beginning to have a hard time understanding where his inventory was and keeping new hires accountable for their actions.
“I would come in the next day, and the jar looks emptier than it should’ve been according to the receipts, but I just can’t tell what happened” he said.
Greenline POS provided him with a tracking system that recorded all movements of cash and product throughout his company. Each movement is tagged to a time and an employee so that Jesse could know who moved what, when, and where.
“I saw on my dashboard that I’ve made only a few grams in sales but I’m seeing almost a whole container of that product missing. That was a red flag and I began looking at the inventory movement logs.” said Jesse.
With this level of visibility of his inventory, Jesse was able to promptly catch and deal with internal theft, saving his business thousands of dollars. The POS showed that Jesse should have more product in stock than he did. The inventory tracker had shown him a discrepancy in product values, and prompted him to investigate. Jesse then reviewed the security camera footage, and saw an employee pocket fistfuls of Blueberry Kush earlier that morning. The offending employee was promptly fired.
“I was able to identify and catch missing stock easily with GetGreenline. The system let me catch toxic employees and cultivate a stellar team by keeping all of them accountable for every product movement.”.
As more and more cannabis retailers enter the legal cannabis market, they will face problems of inventory visibility, stock control, and employee accountability. These problems can be invisible to small operations at first, but become rapidly unmanageable as their businesses grow and multiple locations develop.
It is incredibly important that early stage cannabis retailers get ahead of these issues and develop proper operating procedures tied to a reliable POS that can scale as their business grows. “I’m glad to be using a system like GetGreenline that can work with me and grow as my business grows. It’s great to have confidence that my second and third stores will all run smoothly even when I’m not there.” -Jesse
